OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of celiac disease (CD) in Iranian couples with unexplained infertility. CD is an immunemediated inflammation of the small intestine induced in genetically susceptible people by the irritant gluten and possibly other environmental cofactors. Some studies have reported an association between CD and unexplained infertility. STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective crosssectional study of 100 couples with unexplained infertility tested for immunoglobulin A anti-tissue transglutaminase (IgA antitTG) and total IgA. In patients with positive serologic test, a duodenal biopsy was performed to confirm the diagnosis. RESULTS: Fourteen patients (7%) with unexplained infertility had positive IgA antitTG. In 11 patients (5.5%), endoscopic finding was compatible with CD. The overall prevalence of CD in this study was 5.5% (11/200). CONCLUSION: According to the results of our study, the prevalence of CD was higher in couples with unexplained infertility. We recommend that all couples with unexplained infertility should be screened for CD. Further studies to address this issue are required.
